Young Women in Science (YWiS) Program
The YWiS Program is a research-based educational internship experience for females who are juniors and seniors in high school. The students must have an expressed interest in and potential for educational opportunities and careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The program is designed for students who live within daily commuting distance of the Laboratory in Richland, Washington and attend high school in Benton, Franklin, Yakima County, or Columbia School District (Burbank).
The program provides an eight-week summer research experience that includes four days each week assigned to a scientist-mentor in a specific research area and time each week devoted to educational, career, and leadership development activities involving laboratory demonstrations, field trips, team building and communications and career awareness workshops.
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time they begin their appointment and be a current junior or senior in high school.
YWiS Appointments are given with the understanding that applicants will not have obligations or plans that will necessitate an interruption of research during the tenure of their eight-week internship; therefore, vacations are not allowed.
